Altered Books

Books are a wonderful physical venue for art creation. For each project I try to choose a book that has a particular relationship to my theme. Over the years, I’ve created many altered books in response to grief and loss, travel, environment and family.

Marin County 2021
I created this book to commemorate a visit with good friends in Marin County, Calif. Together we explored Pt Reyes beaches, the tall redwoods in Muir Woods Park, and the rolling countryside hills.

What We Hide in Trees 2020
The secrets we keep are hidden here in drawers, behind screens, locked with keys, buried in fleece.
Book Club 2019
Family Bone 2014 (Loss series)
This poem and the chicken bone chair were created after my mother died, as an expression of the impact on our family of growing up, osteoporosis, illness, ageing, death.
Bark and Water Shelter 2021
Close-up photos of bark and of water, blend in such a way that it’s not always clear which is which. In these pages we find evidence of ways that we make community on the planet, or ways that we sometimes exist in isolation.
